My name is Jennifer Underwood and I would like to declare my candidacy for WSUM Station Manager 2009. I have learned so much this past year working as a Traffic Director on the WSUM Executive Management Team. I plan to use this experience to make the station's transition to the New Year and new building a smooth one.

Aside from the WSUM Executive Management Team, I have also held leadership positions through Powers-Knapp (PK) Scholars, a scholarship program on campus that works to promote diversity and the success of historically underrepresented scholars. Through PK, I have been able to hone the interpersonal skills necessary to assist in leading a large group of people. Furthermore, I have recently completed an internship through Broadcast Interactive Media (BIM), a company that develops and maintains revenue-generating websites for media stations across the country. My time with BIM sharpened my attention to detail and required me to organize content and ad space for over 160 media stations.

My time as Traffic Director has only strengthened my commitment to WSUM. I hope that everyone who is, or becomes a member of WSUM has the opportunity to experience the station the way I have been able to. It is my goal that all members feel welcome at the station whether they are a new trainee, a fifth-year senior, a community member, or anything in between. Everything that we do at the station depends on DJ involvement and I will help to create a station environment that makes everyone feel comfortable and invited.

I am dedicated to the success of WSUM. I will make it my priority to be available to everyone and make every DJ's experience within the WSUM family a positive one.

A NEW SHERIFF IS IN TOWN…
But you have to vote for him(MIKE BEDNARZ) this upcoming Wednesday at the all station meeting before he can start rounding up the cattle and busting up the bandits…….giddy up

• Will you, a WSUM DJ, let MICHAEL BEDNARZ bring the station up to its current potential? If so, the time to do so is tomorrow at 7pm, …
• WSUM IS THE GREATEST STATION IN THE WORLD.
• I KNOW THAT
• PERHAPS YOU KNOW
• … SADLY HOWEVER ONLY A HANDFUL OF LISTENERS KNOW THAT….
• Something needs to be done because NOT ENOUGH listeners of Madison radio are tuned into your show and our dial…
• LET ME HELP YOU, MYSELF, WSUM, and anyone else needing and deserving of help…
MIKE BEDNARZ
What is a WSUM?
Is that the question you immediately receive when you tell a buddy, uncle, ta, ex-girlfriend or WHOEVER that you have a show on this wonderful station of ours? Probably just 3 out of the several thousand people I've ever talked to about WSUM have heard of it. Sad fraction we've been working with indeed. I'm going to do ALL I can to promote you're show, my show, and our station. Come to the meeting tomorrow to find out detailed specifics of my plan.

Overview of …
Why I’m so frustrated?
No one else seems as frustrated about the current state of affairs as I do.
What I can do to reduce my frustration?
Be the best manager I possibly can be.
What you can do to reduce my frustration?
Vote for Mike Bednarz today Wednesday 11/4/09 at the ALL STATION MEETING
• Whistle while you reach…
I'd like to see an increase in our levels of community outreach. Personally I don't currently reach out to the community myself... only grabbing it recently..., but I've thought about it and it would be a good idea for myself and other interested DJ's around the station to work with other campus/non-campus clubs (Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, sports teams, NORML, frats, Feed The Children, dorm halls, x, y, z, 1, 2, 3 etc.) in our future outreach attempts.
There will be no limit on the amount of outreach activities I plan, as long as the all around station and DJ support of the plan is present.
• Why in a room full of COMMUNICATION MAJORS is there no one communicating?
I’ve noticed SEVERE problems with WSUM’s ability and desire to effectively communicate issues.
Fear of communication is NO excuse for poor OR even worse... and MUCH more common... NO communication AT ALL. If I see a problem I will address it.
How will I do this, you ask?
Please let me explain.
Whenever the need for me to speak to you (or vice verse) arises, and I notice it, I WILL COMMUNICATE as effectively and as promptly as I possibly can.
I will communicate the issue MYSELF AND NOT THROUGH OTHERS, and I will NEVER communicate false OR even true issues/charges with those who are not somehow involved with the issue. I recognize that lies, slander, and just being a total jerk to people in general isn't the way to succeed in life, and that my friends is why I will never do any of those things.
The truth has set me free.
If you'd like WSUM and yourself to be free, leave it to me and make sure to vote Wednesday... TODAY... at the all-station meeting at 333 campus.
I will communicate...
RESPECTFULLY,
PROMPTLY,
TRUTHFULLY,
AND...
If at all possible... IN PERSON...
Throughout MORE than MOST of my personal experiences with e-mail, I've come to realize that it is quite possibly the easiest way to communicate, however as of now it is ALSO the least effective... Think of it this way... over 90% of human and animal social interaction occurs through body movement and non verbal cues... I haven't yet found a way to effectively communicate my smile, frown, and wailing hands with email
...webcam you suggest? Don’t own one... sorry.... until that day I will address an issue if at all possible in person or on phone.

• This Station has great potential… but that’s where the problem lies… It’s mostly potential at this point… someone needs to transition WSUM from being a potential success to an ACTUAL SUCCESS….
PROMOTION IS THE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS
We’re not operating at full potential

I have the total desire and ability to make WSUM the best it can and wants to be.
I will discuss my different detailed and never-ending plans for future WSUM promotion Wednesday.
Voting for Michael Bednarz TOMORROW will at the very least result in...
• A change in the way management communicates
• The most massive and intense promotion campaign WSUM HAS EVER WITNESSED. Most politicians don’t like to guarantee results, instead they promise to try…
• This is why I am NOT a politician. I enjoy succeeding more than failing, and I enjoy enjoyment over frustration. I won’t fail and sulk. I will either fail and keep failing until I win…. Or even better win immediately.
Not Voting for Michael Bednarz TOMORROW will at the very least result in...
• If I lose tonight I’ll just keep on running… If I go to grad school, I could be here for 7 more years at least. Without the presence or precedent of term limits, I will always run as long as I have a show and am a UW-Madison Student. Perhaps in the future I’ll declare myself in the race earlier than 24 hours before election hour…. At least 48 next year… I promise that too.
WIN OR LOSE… THE MIKE BEDNARZ VICTORY PARTY WILL BE HELD AT MY HOUSE THIS WEEKEND….
Thinking Friday… perhaps Saturday
Either way, both supporters and opponents should give me a call if this interests you.
WSUM Station Manager Candidate
Help me out… I hate the way that ‘Candidate’ word crowds my current title… help remove it for me and you’ll never regret lending me the help.
I, Maggie Brennan, am declaring my candidacy for WSUM Station Manager of 2010. During the past year, I developed a commitment to the station working as a Traffic Director. The job helped me expand my knowledge within the radio station and my abilities as an efficient worker.

I am currently working toward my leadership certificate and taking a class focused on becoming an effective and positive leader. Over the summer I interned with FOX News Chicago in investigative reporting. Although I am not going into the field, I gained insight into the broadcasting profession and developed my organizational skills.

I hope to maintain the success of WSUM in the coming year. I look forward to using the new facilities to create the greatest opportunities for members and DJs. I will make it my priority to continue to strengthen the WSUM community. I hope all DJs feel welcome and included in a positive environment. WSUM has seen many great accomplishments in recent years, and I look forward to many more in 2010.
Dear Friends,

If you have the urge to be the next Station Manager of WSUM or wish to vote for the new Station Manager, read on.

If you want to be the WSUM Station Manager in 2010, the time to declare your candidacy is now. The job description is posted on the Station election board just inside the front door to the station, on the right and on the WSUM Forum. If, after reading the description, you are still interested please post a candidate statement for your peers to review, both on the WSUM Election board and the Forum, under Station Manager Election on http://www.wsum.org/forums

There will also be a candidate forum on November 2nd (a Monday) during which you can field questions from your peers and state your position on the issues facing WSUM in 2010.

VOTING: The election will run from Monday, November 2nd to midnite November 4th. To vote in person, be at the All-Station Meeting on November 4th. Your vote will be anonymous. To vote by email, send your vote to the General Manager (gm at wsum dot org). This vote is confidential but not anonymous.

Nov 2nd through midnite Nov 13th, candidates for other management positions (which are chosen through an interview process) can submit applications. Those applications are available on the traffic kiosk counter and should be submitted to Jenny Underwood's box behind the kiosk.

At that point, results will still need to be validated by the Governance Board. The General Manager is the referee – any complaints about the process should be directed to him (gm at wsum dot wisc dot edu).
