WSUM Show of the Week: Beats for the Bibliophile
Name of show: Beats for the Bibliophile
Time: Fridays 1-2 p.m.
Host info (Name, Major, year): Catie Rutledge, Art, Sophomore
What is your show like?
My show combines the liquid finesse of poetry with the even-more liquidy finesse of music.
Why should people listen to your show?
Do you ever wish you had a lover to read you poetry while feeding you chocolate and playing you their latest mixtape? Problem solved. I can’t guarantee the chocolate, though.
How long have you had a show at WSUM?
A year and a half
What do you do outside of the station? (Hobbies, job, etc)
I am an artist and have my work up on catierutledge.tumblr.com
Also, I work as a traffic director at WSUM. When I’m not there, I like wearing bicycle helmets as a fashion accessory and using umbrellas inside of Fresh Market.
Favorite Music:
Strfkr, Talking Heads, and Animal Collective
or
anything that makes me cry
or
that I can dance to. Props if the song can do both at the same time.

WSUM Show of the Week: Heavy Petting Zoo
Name of show: “The Heavy Petting Zoo: Make-Out Music & More from the 1930s-1950s”
Time: Saturdays at 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Host info (Name, Major, year): You know me as “Grandma Cyd.” I graduated from UW-Madison in 2005 with a major in Communication Arts (Radio/TV/Film) and a certificate in Leadership.
What is your show like?
“The Heavy Petting Zoo” features music from a wide variety of artists spanning four decades. You’ll hear rare recordings of bands from the “hot jazz” era (1920s) as well as some classic favorites by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. We revive the big band sound of the 1940s and feature the occasional World War II V-Disc recording. Once in a while, you’ll catch a song out of the1960s. But whatever you do, don’t call HPZ an “oldies show.”
Why should people listen to your show?
There are few (if any) opportunities to hear this type of music on the radio anymore, especially in the Madison area. Each week, I try to select songs that are hard to find but worth remembering. I find that younger listeners stick around because they appreciate the musical charm of a bygone era, and older listeners are grateful to hear this music on the radio again.
I’m told the show is a wonderful backdrop to a dinner party, cookout, or campfire. It’s the perfect accompaniment to your Saturday night!
How long have you had a show at WSUM?
HPZ turns 8 years old in June!
What do you do outside of the station? (Hobbies, job, etc)
I just wrapped up my five-year membership and two-year term as the President of the Friends of Madison Student Radio board, which raises funds to help support WSUM (donate at www.wsumfriends.org!). I’ve also served as the volunteer coordinator of the Wisconsin Book Festival for the last four years. On the side, I have a day job that pays me to read books and ask questions, which are two things I do best.
But they don’t call me “Grandma” just for grins. I earned that title! I enjoy old movies and TV shows (Dick Van Dyke is the shiz); attending the occasional opera, symphony, or figure skating championship; traveling; reading; bowling; gardening; and going to bed at a reasonable hour. I also like baseball, which is SO a granny sport.
Favorite Music:
Anything featured on “The Heavy Petting Zoo,” of course! (Is this a trick question?) When I need a break from my ‘homework,’ I listen to groups like Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, and whatever else my friends might recommend.
Fun Fact about you or your show:
“The Heavy Petting Zoo” is one of the longest-running shows on WSUM, and it’s the longest-running show upheld by a single host. Other shows like “On Wisconsin” and “The Student Section” have had new hosts come in and out throughout the years.

WSUM Show of the Week: The Go To Bed After This Show Show

Name of show: The Go To Bed After This Show Show

Time: Midnight-1 a.m. Sunday nights
Host info (Name, Major, year): My name is Erik Kramer, and I’m a sophomore here studying Environmental Studies and Geography.
What is your show like?
The general idea for the show is to give people trying to get to sleep or people up late studying something to listen to. That thing you get into right before you sleep, where you’re half-asleep and slightly dreaming but not unconscious yet- my goal is to provide a soundtrack for that.
Why should people listen to the show?
You might hear a lot of stuff you haven’t heard before! I try to focus on more experimental music of all genres and decades- from the newest experimental rock and electronic music to 70s ambient pieces, weirdo folk and half hour long tape experiments. A lot of unique, boundary-pushing stuff that I hope expands my listeners’ ideas of what music can be
How long have you had a show at WSUM?
I’ve had The Go To Bed After This Show Show since spring of 2012.
What do you do outside of the station? (Hobbies, job, etc)
I am a musician and try to write and record as much as I can (http://soundcloud.com/erik-kramer) and would love to eventually start playing around Madison. I also like being outdoors, eating good food, being involved with environmental organizations on campus, and generally having a good ol time.
Some of my favorite albums I’ve been listening to in the past year:
Akron/Family’s whole discography, Baths- "Cerulean", Macintosh Plus- "Floral Shoppe", Swans- The Seer, Sun Araw- "Beach Head", Heron’s Dawn Anthology, Frank Ocean- "Channel Orange", Bibio- "Mind Bokeh", Oneohtrix Point Never- "Replica", Novos Baianos- "Acabou Chorare", Steely Dan- "Aja"
Fun Fact about you or your show:
Every week I make a very special poster for my show.

WSUM Show of the Week: Anorak County
Comments From Luis Perez, our featured Show of the Week:
Slumberland Records ought to put me on their payroll, considering how much I play their bands. Also, Jon Wurster is my personal hero.
