Volunteer at WSUM

WSUM is staffed almost entirely by volunteers. DJs and talk show hosts complete both on-air and off-air work. WSUM is not looking for trainees for the singular purpose of doing a show on the radio. We expect our trainees to become a part of the larger organization and contribute to the station as a whole.

Participation at WSUM is open to any qualified volunteer but special efforts should be made to accommodate registered student volunteers. Community members can be trained at the discretion of the program director in consultation with the general manager.

Training is required because on-air staff members must be aware of and obey FCC rules at all times. Violating FCC regulations could potentially result in the loss of the station itself. Also, training gives individuals the technical expertise necessary to operate equipment properly. Read specific information on training (dates and expectations).

Training last about eight weeks and involves a commitment of at least 10-20 hours. First, individuals must submit a personal statement to our General Manager and tour the station. Then there is a first large group training session, which officially kicks off training. Afterwards, trainees break into small group sessions for 4 weeks. Then trainees shadow certified DJs and talk show hosts. Lastly, there is a final large group training session, which officially ends training. All portions of training are mandatory.

Completing training does not guarantee you will be board certified or receive a show. You have to submit an air check tape as a demonstration of your skill and on-air capabilities. Air check tapes are used to determine board certification. Then, board certified members may submit a show proposal to be considered for an on-air time slot. Our program director decides which shows will be on the air.
