My instincts failed me last night. Cherub put on a pretty fantastic, and may I mention Sold Out, show at the Majestic. Now, when I watched some of their Youtube performances, I noticed that most were recorded at outdoor venues they had played. It was after they started playing last night that I realized that outdoor venues are not always an accurate representation for the potential sound quality of the performer, especially at music festivals. Yet, in an indoor setting like the Majestic, they sounded much better. The lead singer Jordan Kelley's unique talent for reaching high notes with an attitude had shown through from the opening number to the encore featuring the track that got them famous.
It was a very electronic show, from the drum beats to the vocoder usage, and the crowd loved every minute. The band even took a moment to acknowledge that they didn't expect the crowd to know the words to some of their lesser-known tracks from their new LP. I cannot remember the last time I had seen a show in which the artist was singing live, and yet the crowd was dancing to electronic beats. All in all, they had the right formula down, switching off from their hits to well-known EDM tracks like “Feel So Close” by Calvin Harris and their own mashing of Daft Punk's “Around the World” with The Beatles' “Eleanor Rigby”.
