Dear WSUM hosts, deejays, news makers, sports people, trainees, members of executive management, and whom else it may concern:

Hi, my name is Chali Pittman, and I'm running for the position of Station Manager. As you may know, this is the only student position here that is elected, and I feel I am qualified for your vote based on my dedication to this station and knowledge of its many operations.

I've been involved with WSUM since my first semester freshman year, when I fell in love with radio broadcasting. I proceeded to host my own hip-hop show for several semesters. This summer, I became Assistant Technical Director. This includes, but is not limited to, engineering our weekly Live@WSUM show, where I set – up, sound-check, live mix, and tear down for bands that play live on the radio in our conference room.

At the beginning of this school year, I was also offered the position of Production Director. This involves producing PSAs, legal ID's, and underwriting spots. This also includes organizing show promos, for which there are now over fifty audio promos on the BSI and a whole wall of visual promos – a substantial number of show promos for a semester. I currently hold these two job positions.

In my experience, the beauty of WSUM is that it is a launching pad and hosting ground for vastly different kinds of activities and radio programming, and requires different skill sets for sports broadcasting, than for news-casting, than for talk radio, than for music deejays.  If you were to elect me as station manager, I would try my best to facilitate communication between these different areas of the station.

For one, I would like to maintain the cohesiveness of the Executive Management team. One way I would like to do this is establish some kind of a system where members of ExecMan are always aware of other members' current projects, office hours, and contact information. This information could be conveyed with Google Calendar or another kind of staff communication software.

I would also like to emphasize communication between the executive management staff and WSUM volunteers, in an effort to remain ever – responsive to our on – air staff.

I would like for DJs to always have the increased ability to be in-the-know about station happenings and policies. And in order for DJs to continue to use this station as an educational and informative broadcasting resource, I would like to reach out to Journalism and Communication Arts professors, as well as professionals at Wisconsin Public Radio, to serve as springboards for advice and industry know-how.

Lastly, I would like to increase WSUM's outreach to the Madison community. This could be accomplished in a variety of ways.

With warmest regards,

Chali Pittman
