“Too many times that I've seen the wrong signs
Empty out the hatred in life
We're bringing only good vibes”So sings Rebelution, currently a popular favorite of many college-aged reggae-rock lovers in America. Since 2007, Rebelution has been putting out hit records, starting with their debut album Courage to Grow.
Songs like “Feeling Alright” epitomize the laid-back, reflective mood that Rebelution radiates. Rebelution's sound utilizes conventional one-drop reggae mixed with modern-sounding rock guitars and heavier effects. They're a perfect soundtrack to a party with good friends, and their music is enjoyed by all kinds of people—people of all ages, and not just strictly reggae fans.
Furthering their crossover between reggae, rock, and acoustic genres, 2012 marked a triple album release, Peace of Mind, available in regular, dub, and acoustic versions.
I first saw Rebelution last year at Reggae on the Rocks at RedRocks Amphitheater in Colorado. They were the headliners, following performances by Collie Buddz and Matisyahu. I was surprised to see that they looked like relatively average dudes, someone you'd meet around town—except their sound will blow you away like no other. There's no denying the epic density of songs like “Suffering” when this band performs them live.
