Quite a few miles have been traveled (and milestones reached) since Kacey Musgraves last played Madison. Her sold-out show at the Barrymore Theatre last February came days after winning the Grammy for Best Country Album for “Same Trailer Different Park” and Best Country Song for “Merry Go Round” (where she received a second nomination in the same category for the Miranda Lambert-sung “Mama's Broken Heart”). Following the momentum of these award nominations and wins, Musgraves has continued touring, this time under the flag of the “Same Tour, Different Trailer” name, bringing her act to the Orpheum on Thursday, February 19.
Her style is rooted in the singer/songwriter tradition of greats such as Loretta Lynn and John Prine, but her lyrics have bucked country trends and mainstream country radio through mentions of same-sex relationships and marijuana use. Her friendship with Katy Perry led to a CMT Crossroads session as well as a world tour in 2014. Her success has helped her share the stage this past year with heroes Lynn and Prine, and led to performances on the long-running PBS music program Austin City Limits, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. It was recently announced that Musgraves will be one of the headliner acts at the 2015 Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
Musgraves' live performances feature the range of her musical interests and her band's talents—frequent covers include Bob Marley's “Three Little Birds”, Nancy Sinatra's “These Boots Were Made for Walkin'”, and “No Scrubs” by TLC. The rest of her set is sure to be filled with hits from her 2013 release, the RIAA certified Gold debut album, as well as a few new tunes she's written while on the road, touring, for the past couple of years.
Kacey Musgraves w/ John & Jacob, The Orpheum Theatre, Thursday, February 19, 6:30pm doors, 7:30pm show.
