Ambiguity surrounding Catalonian independence continues as the President of the region, Carles Puigdemont, has yet to make clear whether he has officially declared independence from Spain. As of now, Puigdemont appears to have slowed the move towards independence in order to negotiate with the Spanish government. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has made clear that if Catalonia declares independence, Spain will impose direct rule in the region. As a result of having a unique language and culture, the region of Catalonia has historically made several attempts to secede from Spain. Catalonia is also the richest region of Spain, leading to many of its inhabitants claiming that they bear a disproportionate amount of the country’s tax burden.
