Tonight, the halls of Madison's High Noon Saloon will be graced by the baroque pop singer-songwriter Natalie Prass, and serenaded by the tunes of Perth, Australia's Stella Donnelley. High Noon's September 20th show is expected to be an evening filled with lush vocals, refined and refreshing musicality, and vulnerable identities politicized by the world surrounding us.
Prass's eponymous debut record defined her as a thoughtful and emotive emergent voice for independent music. However, her follow-up studio record, taking place in the aftermath of Donald Trump's election to President of the U.S., proves Prass as a blooming and confident architect of her own heart, while mindful of the political circumstances that surround her growth. Solidarity in womanhood is championed in “Sisters,” while “Short Court Style” is a self-assured anthem of new-found and lost identity. Her debut record, a longing and heartfelt tribute to a foregone lover, flutters yet never falters— “Bird of Prey” is a keen and cutting declaration of distance between Prass and a romance, while “My Baby Don't Understand Me” is a mighty yet somber track whose familiar organization reminds us of our own heartbreaks and flames that still burn within us. Prass is a timeless talent cemented in our generation for her distinguished poise and lovely noise, and thanks to the thoughtful diligence of Prass's longtime friend and producer Matthew E. White, The Future and The Past is unequivocally a piece of art, and certain contender for many “Best of 2018” lists.
Fresh from her SXSW performance that defined her as a standout, Stella Donnelley's modest yet intimate debut Thrush Metal opens the listener from inside and out. With candid lyricism, a home-grown sound, and intimate style, Stella's visit to Madison is a promising folksy venture into our own hearts.
Together, these two voices and story-tellers will engage an audience with questions of what it means to be in love, what it means to be comfortable in our own skin, and what our duties are as music lovers and moody young adults living in a world that continues to wane in civility?
