Borgore’s Buygore University Tour brought three incredible DJs to Madison’s Majestic Theatre on Sunday, October 7th. Borgore, GG Magree, and Benda all delivered hard-hitting EDM mixes. The show’s focus was dubstep, but branched out into bass house, riddim, psytrance, rap, rave, and even punk pop.
Benda, an up-and-coming producer from LA, opened the show. He played a very technical mix, involving double drops, chopping, and charging his Juul on an empty CDJ. The second track that he played was “Rise” by Svdden Death, which set the tone for a mix full of equally heavy tracks. The crowd loved GG Magree’s playful energy. In addition to an energetic dubstep set, she also played classics like Alice Deejay’s “Better Off Alone,” and even nostalgic pop-punk songs like “First Date” by Blink-182 and “Dirty Little Secret” by The All-American Rejects. Borgore’s set boasted a significant amount of variety, including dubstep, bass house, riddim, and more. At one point he mixed Cascada’s “Everytime We Touch” into “Jotaro” by Phiso, the track that brought riddim into the mainstream. That particular transition floored me. The crowd thoroughly enjoyed Borgore’s set, excitedly moshing to “Throwin’ Elbows” by Excision & Space Laces and jumping to the beat of insane psytrance drops. His set also included obligatory drops of RL Grime’s “Core,” “Mo Bamba” by Sheck Wes, and Gammer’s “The Drop.”
Despite lacking the typical LED screen visuals of an EDM show, the DJs and crowd delivered mainstage energy. Whether we were headbanging to riddim or vibing to bass house, it was a great show.
