Having just released their first EP in October, indie rock supergroup boygenius is set to hit the Sylvee stage this Friday, November 16th. The group, a joint project comprising Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, has enjoyed tremendous early success as a trio. Each artist has performed in Madison before as a solo act. Dacus and Bridgers each performed in April 2018 while Baker played in Madison in October 2017.
boygenius is on its first tour together, and early reviews have noted clear chemistry among the group members. The formatting of the shows have allowed each artist an individual set to play their own discography in part, before coming together in the end to play the entirety of their six song, self-titled debut.
Each artist is a star in her own right. Lucy Dacus' Historian, Julien Baker's Turn Out the Lights, and Phoebe Bridgers' Stranger in the Alps all were released since the beginning of 2017 and have scored each star tremendous success and accolades. Their decision to join forces in a collaborative EP happened gradually after several group texts, emails, and idea sharing, according to the New Yorker.
The “boygenius” EP is at times somber and in other parts teeming with vengeance. The three bonded over their humble beginnings and the emotion they convey is powerful. Their sound together is instrumentally unique as they press the boundaries of indie rock. In a recent interview, Bridgers noted the instant bond the group had around each other and Baker continued saying it was “easy to feel understood.”
Boygenius will showcase its masterful debut in Madison on Friday at The Sylvee. Doors open at 5:45. The show begins at 7:15.
