Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and Satya Rhodes-Conway advance out of the primary and will square off in an April 2 general election.
The two top vote-earners won 28 percent and 27 percent of the vote respectively. The rest of the field fell behind with Mo Cheeks winning 23 percent, Raj Shukla winning 18 percent and Nick Hart winning one percent.
To the question of whether those other candidates might endorse her in the general election, Rhodes-Conway says that is “a question for another day.”
“It was such a wide field that I honestly didn't know what to expect,” she said at her election night watch party. “It's pretty exciting.”
On the other side of town, Soglin started the general campaign saying there is a clear distinction between him and Rhodes-Conway.
“We have a very clear choice,” Soglin said. “It's a clear choice in regards to how the city develops and grows.”
Last July, Soglin said he would not seek another term as Madison mayor and would instead focus on his gubernatorial campaign. At that announcement, he stopped short of endorsing Rhodes-Conway but called her “eminently qualified” among the field of candidates then running. The two will face each other in six weeks.
Other races:
In other local races, Tag Evers and David Hoffert will face each other for District 13 alder. For Madison school board, Seat 3 will be challenged by Cris Carusi and Kaleem Caire, Seat 4 by Ali Muldrow and David Blaska and Seat 5 by Ananda Mirilli and incumbent TJ Mertz.
