Wisconsin expands eligibility for food assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced Monday afternoon that it has raised the income limit to qualify for The Emergency Food Assistance Program for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, a Wisconsin household of one with an income of less than $38,280 will be able to receive meals from TEFAP-sponsored food pantries around the state.

Acting DHS Secretary Andrea Palm described this expansion as a crucial public health measure.

“Good nutrition is foundational,” wrote Palm in a press release, “and we want to help ensure families in need of assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic have access.”

This policy follows a series of coronavirus-related changes to Wisconsin's food assistance programs, including moving pantries outdoors and adding drive-up service at some pantries to minimize the virus' spread.

Wisconsinites interested in applying for TEFAP benefits can do so online, over the phone, or in-person at their local agency. Dane County's Human Services office is located at 125 Veterans Rd and open from 7:45 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. on weekdays.
