Day and night, protestors demand justice for Black lives after officers shot Jacob Blake's back seven times in Kenosha on Sunday.
On Tuesday afternoon Gov. Evers declared a State of Emergency in his Executive Order #86, calling the National Guard to Kenosha and Madison for the third day of protests. The Executive Order states it seeks to bring safety to the demonstrators, businesses, infrastructure and community members.
Protesters in Madison lit dumpsters on fire, shattered glass storefronts and threw items at officers late Monday evening. In response, MPD released tear gas and launched sponge bullets at crowds.
In his Executive Order, Gov. Evers validates and acknowledges protestors' hard work in fighting against police brutality but asks for peaceful demonstration.
“We cannot allow the cycle of systemic racism and injustice to continue. We also cannot continue going down this path of damage and destruction” Evers said.
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says that violence “undercuts” the movement, asking citizens to contact their state and local legislators to demand changes, reports Channel 3000.
Madison Police made six arrests Monday night. Reports have been made that over 500 people gathered downtown throughout the evening.
