Kanye West filed a lawsuit against the Wisconsin Elections Committee on Friday to ensure that he is on the ballot, according to WMTV news.
Last Thursday, the WEC rejected his attempt to run on the grounds that West missed the 5 o'clock deadline. He submitted his 2,000 signature petition fourteen seconds after the deadline.
The lawsuit mostly revolves around the semantics of the law. Commissioners argue that submissions will not be accepted once the clock strikes five. West's attorneys insist that the state is unconstitutionally qualifying seconds in the law and that submissions should be accepted until 5:01 p.m.
West's attorneys also claim that the Commission's office incorrectly recorded the time of West's submission and created unnecessary obstacles and delays with locked doors.
The WEC declined to comment to WMTV news.
Kanye West is pursuing a similar lawsuit in Ohio. Independent candidates for president and vice president must file joint candidacy statements and nominating petitions to be allowed on the ballot. Ohio's Secretary of State Frank LaRose claims the information and signature on West's candidacy statement and nomination petition did not match the voters' candidacy statement and nomination petition. West is running on a highly spiritual platform, each of his campaign promises includes a bible verse. Two of the ten are explicitly religion based, including mandatory classroom prayer and supporting faith-based organizations. West also takes a strong stance against mass incarceration and in favor of environmental protections.
