Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, feminist role model and cultural icon, died Friday at age 87.

The Supreme Court Justice died at home surrounded by family from complications due to metastatic pancreatic cancer, according to National Public Radio

Justice Ginsberg told her granddaughter, Clara Spera, that her dying wish is that her seat on the Supreme Court will not be filled until the United States elects a new president.

She pioneered gender equality in the courts and stood up for women's rights through her entire career.

“Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature,” Chief Justice John Roberts said. “We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice.”
