A new art exhibit in Madison celebrating Black lives and artists made its grand opening to the public on Sunday.

Local Madison business Integrated Art Group and Willy Street's Cafe Coda introduced an exhibit called “From Here on Out” displaying Black artists' perspectives of social unrest and ongoing powerful social movements. On the “From Here on Out” exhibit homepage, the exhibit states a goal to “explore how artists are using their creative practice for self- expression and to process current events.”

The exhibit is both on-site in the Marzen room at 2345 Atwood Ave. and online where art admirers can browse and shop the pieces. When browsing virtually, visitors can read the artist statements for each piece.

Upcoming events are posted on the exhibit's homepage and every month a virtual Art Toast is held. Those wishing to attend any of the “From Here on Out” exhibit events will need to RSVP online.

In an interview with Channel 3000, Integrated Art Group owner and co-curator Margaret LeMay said the exhibit seeks to provide a platform for local Black artists.

“I looked at the role we played and how many artists of color and Black artists we represented and there weren't so many,” LeMay said. “I really wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to these artists and celebrate.”

Artist Tony Catteruccia who created a limited-edition print to promote the exhibit said that the pandemic has created challenges for many artists.

Donated funds will be made out to organizations engaging in efforts to promote racial equity and stand against social injustice. Artists are still encouraged to submit their pieces as the exhibit is expected to remain open until the beginning of March 2021.
