I have never set foot on a surfboard and I've never dreamed of riding the waves, but the sweet sounds of flipturn's music make me not only dream, but fully believe that I've spent years floating on the water.
The Florida-based band combines airy guitars commonly found in surfer rock with the strong vocal power to make me feel like I belong on the beach. The summery rock takes inspiration from other popular indie rock bands, having sounds similar to groups such as Peach Pit, The Growlers, and Vampire Weekend. Within all of this is a stronger undertone of rock, making their music a little more hard hitting than “traditional” indie.
A major feature of flipturn's unique sound is Dillion Basse, the band's vocalist. Dillion's voice has a stark similarity to the hard hitting vocals of the band Greta Van Fleet. The background instrumental is just as powerful, but with the easy feeling of surfer rock.
With the release of flipturn's new album, fans are excited for their current tour, and with their appearance this Friday in Madison being in such high demand, the venue is sold out. It will be exciting what other adventures this up and coming band will take us on. If you have the opportunity to see this band, I hope you relish in the warmth of their tunes, and hang ten.
