For the second straight night, the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team entered the third period with the lead. For the second straight night, it could not hold it.

The Badgers (2-8-0, 1-5-0 Big Ten) played another good game, but not good enough to knock off the No. 3 Minnesota Golden Gophers (9-1-0, 6-0-0 Big Ten) in a 3-2 overtime loss Saturday night at the Kohl Center.

Ryland Mosley and Quinn Finley had the two markers for the Badgers with both coming in the second period. Finley's goal was his seventh of the season, tied for the most in the Big Ten conference. However, it would not be enough in the defeat as the Badgers failed to reach three goals yet again tonight.

Here are my three takeaways from the game:

Penalties cost the Badgers for a second straight night

There's some good news for the Badgers tonight: they did not allow a single goal at 5-on-5. However, it still wasn't good enough because they allowed two power play goals.

After a scoreless first period, Minnesota took a 1-0 lead just under eight minutes into the second after Kyle Kukkonen got called for tripping. Brody Lamb found the loose change in a mad scramble out front to open the scoring.

Later, with the Badgers on top 2-1, Sawyer Scholl took an undisciplined holding penalty to put the Golden Gophers back on the power play. Connor Kurth scored the goal this time to tie the game up at two and send it to overtime.

Minnesota finished a perfect 2-for-2 on the power play. The Badgers were 0-for-2 on their two opportunities.

Gramme's great night

With RIT transfer goaltender Tommy Scarfone out with an injury, the series belonged to sophomore William Gramme. He had a good night last night, but he was fantastic tonight for the Badgers.

Gramme finished the game with 39 saves on 42 Minnesota shots, blowing past his previous career high of 28, set Friday night.

He was especially great in the opening period of the contest when it felt like the Badgers didn't have their legs under them yet. Gramme made 15 saves in the first period.

Unfortunately, it wouldn't be enough to get the Badgers a victory.

Déja vu for the Badgers in more ways than one

Last year, the Badgers were dismissed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament due to a bad change in overtime. This overtime brought more of the same.

Minnesota won the opening faceoff in overtime and possessed the puck for the first two minutes. It resulted in the opening trio for the Badgers being stuck on the ice for way too long. Mosley was the first to make a bad decision in trying to get off the ice and it created a rush for Minnesota that they couldn't capitalize on. The second time, however, Wisconsin would not be so fortunate.

After Jack Horbach got knocked off the puck in the offensive zone, he and Owen Lindmark tried to get to the bench with Minnesota in possession and it sent Jimmy Snuggerud and Brodie Ziemer in on a 2-on-1. Snuggerud flipped the puck up in the air and Ziemer batted it out of the air to finish off a highlight-reel overtime winner and give the Golden Gophers a sweep.

Additionally, the Badgers were held to two goals or less for the eighth straight game and ninth out of 10 games overall. That streak is now top-3 in the program's modern-era history for the longest such streak.

Stars of the Game

3 – D Ben Dexheimer, Wisconsin. Had a pair of assists and was +2 in a night where he was noticeable every time he touched the ice.

2 – G William Gramme, Wisconsin. Fantastic in between the pipes for the second night in a row, posting a career-high 39 saves.

1 – F Brodie Ziemer, Minnesota. Scored the game-winning goal in overtime in highlight-reel fashion and had a secondary assist on the game-tying tally.

Up Next

The Badgers hit the road next week for University Park for a two-game series with No. 19 Penn State. Game one is Friday night with puck drop at 6 pm CST.
