If you've been wanting to have Mediterranean food but haven't known where to go, here are two of my recommendations for some of the best Mediterranean in Madison.

Mediterranean Cafe

  • Address: 625 State Street, Madison, WI 53703
  • Dish I Tried: Lamb & Beef Shawarma Plate
  • Price: $14.25

Mediterranean Cafe offers a cozy, unique atmosphere with comfortable booths and colorful tapestries. Med Café focuses on authentic Mediterranean dishes. The Lamb & Beef Shawarma Plate features tender, marinated meat served with rice, fresh salad, hummus, and warm pita bread, providing a nice blend of flavors and textures that complement each other perfectly to create a light and filling meal.

What I Loved About It:

The shawarma was flavorful and juicy, complemented perfectly by the creamy hummus and soft pita. The portion size was generous, offering a good value for the price. The casual setting and quick service made for a pleasant dining experience.

A Brief History:

Mediterranean Cafe has been a staple on State Street for over 28 years serving both the university and Madison communities, celebrated for its authentic Mediterranean cuisine with an Algerian influence. The restaurant takes pride in creating a unique dining experience, offering a wide variety of dishes.

Banzo

  • Address: 2105 Sherman Avenue, Madison, WI 53704
  • Dish I Tried: F-Bomb Pita Sandwich
  • Price: $14.50

Banzo specializes in fresh, made-from-scratch Mediterranean food, with a menu based on traditional recipes enhanced by their signature touch. The F-Bomb Pita Sandwich includes two falafel balls paired with grilled chicken, served in a pita filled with hummus, chopped salad, chips, pickles, and a choice of tahini, yogurt, or hot sauce. I opted for the tahini and it helped contribute to the fusion of flavors within the dish.

What I Loved About It:

The falafel was crispy on the outside and tender inside, filled with flavor. The combination of falafel and grilled chicken provided a satisfying contrast, and the fresh salad added a refreshing element. The casual, welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff made overall experience with the trip.

A Brief History:

Founded by Aaron Collins and Netalee Sheinman, Banzo began as a food cart and expanded to a brick-and-mortar location due to its popularity. The restaurant focuses on high-quality ingredients, often sourced locally, and offers award-winning falafel and freshly made Mediterranean dishes.

Final Thoughts:

Both Mediterranean Cafe and Banzo provide exceptional Mediterranean dining experiences within WSUM's airwaves. Whether you're seeking traditional dishes in a cozy setting or a vibrant atmosphere with special twists to the food, these establishments are both great places to try.
